A walk to explore some of Woodford’s railway heritage. One and a half hours or one hour if returning along the Eydon Road.
- Start at junction of Parsons Street, High Street and South Street. The footpath leads between two houses, over stiles and across fields to Eydon Road.
- Cross straight over up farm track, through gate and up the track.
- Turn sharp left at sign warning trespassers about CCTV cameras.
- At gate, enter field and cross diagonally to the right, through a gap into next field.
- Keep hedge on your left. When hedge bends there is a stile in hedge.
- Cross stile, go diagonally over next field up the slope and there is another stile in the hedge.
- Turn right and follow path to Cherry Tree Farm, through farmyard and to the road.
- Turn right and walk downhill towards Eydon (about 1 mile). At bottom of hill you will see where the former East-West railway line used to cross the road on a bridge (no longer there). Turn right and follow bridleway to a gate (can be muddy here), through gate into field and keep hedge on your left. After about 50 yards turn left.
- Through gate and over another railway bridge. Follow this ancient Green Lane until you reach the Eydon Road again.
- Opportunity here to explore the Pocket Park on the old railway lines. You can turn right and walk back to the village or follow the track to the left where it says “Dairy Farm”. Go past sign saying “Slow”, “deaf dog and children!”.
- Straight ahead down the track, through gate and follow path across field keeping hedge on your left. Cross a stile, turn right along broad grass track and over the “Black Bridge” and follow the Jurassic Way bridleway back across the fields to Gravel Farm and the former Woodford Halse railway station and bridges.
